Holter Monitoring

Holter monitor is a medical device that measures hearts activity such as rate and rhythms. Aside this, it may be used to look for other abnormalities that affects normal heart function. The use of this device is a non-invasive method.

A Holter monitor test is usually performed after a traditional test (electrocardiogram) because a times, electrocardiograms don’t detect any irregularities after diagnosing irregular heart rhythms due to the fact that patients are hooked up for a shorter time. A Holter monitor can be hooked to a patient within a range of 24 to 48 hours.

There are no risks involved in wearing a Holter monitor other than just a possible discomfort and skin irritation where electrodes were placed. Patients are not to bath the entire time a Holter monitor is hooked to them because getting it wet will get it damaged. Because it uses signals in its operation, it will be advisable to move away at least 6 inches away from electrical gadgets.

Patients can carry out usual daily activities but then they will be required to put down a record of all daily activities and the exact time it is being done.

Upon checking of results, physicians may require that you get hooked up to a wireless Holter monitor which can be worn for a longer period of time for further monitoring.
