As part of activities to commemorate World Heart Awareness Month, the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has partnered with Kasapreko PLC, producers of Awake Purified Drinking Water, to screen more than 200 staff members and residents within the company’s surrounding community for cardiovascular health risk factors.
The health screening was aimed at promoting heart health awareness, encouraging early detection and empowering participants to take proactive steps towards maintaining healthier hearts. The exercise focused on key cardiovascular health indicators, including hypertension, diabetes and stroke risk factors.
Dr. Innocent Adzamli, Team Lead for the outreach, emphasised the broader public health objective of the initiative, explaining that the exercise was not limited to Kasapreko employees but also extended to people living and working within the surrounding industrial community.
“We are not concentrating only on Kasapreko staff. We are looking at the community around the factory area. They have also joined us today for the medical screening.”
Marketing Manager of Kasapreko PLC, Mrs. Linda Aidoo, expressed excitement about the strong turnout and the opportunity to bring preventive healthcare directly to employees and members of the surrounding community.
She noted that many participants were particularly eager to have their health indicators checked and to gain a better understanding of their overall health status.
Mrs. Aidoo also reaffirmed Kasapreko PLC’s commitment to supporting cardiovascular healthcare in Ghana, highlighting the company’s third quarter donation of GH₵150,000 to the National Cardiothoracic Centre.
“And to top it up, we donated our quarterly cheque of GH₵150,000 to the National Cardiothoracic Centre. As we say, our commitment still stands.”
The collaboration forms part of Kasapreko’s longstanding One4Life partnership with the National Cardiothoracic Centre, currently in its 11th year, powered by Awake Purified Drinking Water. Under the initiative, a percentage of proceeds from the sale of every bottle is donated to a special patient fund, which helps subsidise up to 50 percent of heart surgery costs for vulnerable patients.
For the more than 200 employees and community members who participated in the screening, the exercise provided a convenient opportunity to prioritise their health despite their busy schedules.
One staff beneficiary expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying, “If they are coming all the way to my workplace, why don’t I just take advantage and get it done? Luckily, I found out I am okay. So this is a thank you to Kasapreko and to Korle Bu Cardio for organising this.”
To provide comprehensive health assessments, the laboratory team conducted a range of diagnostic tests during the exercise. Team Lead of the Laboratory Unit, Mr. Sandyson Owusu Poku, outlined some of the tests conducted.
“We ran haemoglobin genotype, blood grouping, malaria, typhoid, cholesterol, glucose, HDL, and then PSA for the men as well.”
The successful partnership demonstrates how corporate social responsibility can contribute directly to improving access to preventive healthcare, while strengthening efforts to promote cardiovascular health and support life saving cardiac care in Ghana.
