A Director's Message from Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah
National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC)
Today marks the beginning of our global observance of World Heart Month, leading up to World Heart Day on September 29, 2026.
As a proud member of the World Heart Federation, the National Cardiothoracic Centre joins organizations worldwide to amplify a critical message: cardiovascular health demands our immediate attention and proactive care.
2026 Campaign Theme:
"Heart disease can hide in plain sight: Don’t Miss a Beat."
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the world’s leading cause of death, claiming between 17.9 and 19.2 million lives each year. Roughly 1 in every 3 deaths globally is caused by CVD—more than any other health condition—with heart attacks and strokes accounting for the vast majority.
Too many warning signs go unnoticed, and progress remains far too slow. We must act now to safeguard our lives, our families, and our communities.
The Three Pillars of Action
To combat the global burden of CVD, this year's campaign focuses on three essential steps:
-
1. SEE THE SIGNS
Recognize the symptoms and warning signs early. Heart issues can be subtle and easily overlooked—awareness and timely action are vital. -
2. PROTECT YOUR HEART
Take ownership of your health. Many cardiovascular conditions can be prevented or managed through healthy lifestyle choices, routine health screenings, early detection, and proper care. -
3. DEMAND ACTION
Advocate for change. We urge governments, policymakers, and health leaders to prioritize equitable access to heart-health prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for all.
Practicing What We Preach
The core message is simple: Every heartbeat matters.
Throughout this month, we urge everyone not only to share the message of World Heart Month 2026, but to live it out daily. Take practical steps to protect your cardiovascular well-being, schedule your regular check-ups, and encourage those around you to do the same.
Together, let us see the signs, protect our hearts, demand action—and Don’t Miss a Beat.
